Local college tries to dress up snack foods that revolt foreigners (2014/04/29)

CNN reported that foreigners find several Taiwanese snacks revolting, such as preserved eggs, pig blood rice pudding and stinky tofu. To dispel this assertion, a local university invited chefs to put a twist on the ingredients so they would be more appealing to foreigners.

A German chef chops this preserved egg and tofu and places it into a martini glass. He then tops it with mashed potato and decorations. This European delicacy infused with preserved egg received a mixed response from foreign students.

It is a little spicy, but it’s not bad.

Another wasabi flavored dish is made from stinky tofu with ham and cheese inserted in the middle. Taipei Chengshih University of Science and Technology is trying to challenge CNN’s assertion that such foods are repulsive to foreigners by inviting foreign and Taiwanese chefs to put a twist on the foods.

I tried to achieve more balance, and disguise and hide some of the flavors that foreigners don’t like.

Hiding this preserved egg makes it so people won’t be afraid to try it. They will discover that preserved egg is actually tasty. It’s a way of toppling tradition.

These creative ways of preparing traditional Taiwanese foods show the diversity and appeal of local cuisine.
