Music ensemble brings attention to Taichung saxophone industry (2014/02/16)

For years a factory in Shengang District, Taichung has quietly produced top quality saxophones sold by some of the world’s leading brands. A music ensemble is hoping to bring greater attention to this star factory by making saxophone music a part of local culture. In the process, it is transforming the lives of its members and changing the community. 

This is the Hot Sax Saxophone ensemble from Shengang District, Taichung. Members come from all walks of life, many with no foundation in music. They learn from scratch and show deep devotion to their instrument. 

While each member of the ensemble is different, there is one individual who is quite special.

His name is Wu Bin, a composer known for having “perfect pitch.” He is also known for being Taiwan’s youngest master piano tuner.

Wu Bin’s father, Wu Chun-hsia, discovered that his son behaved differently from other children. He did not like to speak with others and often ignored things around him or easily got into conflict. A doctor diagnosed Wu Bin as being autistic.

His biggest battle is autism because he does not temper his speech. Instead, he simply says what he feels and can offend people without knowing it.

It didn’t matter that his son did not know how to play the saxophone. Wu Chun-hsia put him in the ensemble in the hope that music would help him communicate.

The painful part was using my mouth to blow and trying to catch the beat with a sound quality that wasn’t great. I would lose my breath and drag along. It took me about six months to catch up with the rest of the ensemble.

After dedicating himself to the saxophone, Wu Bin benefitted from the encouragement of others. He is better adapted to life and can take instruction from others. He embodies the true spirit of the ensemble, which is to use music to transform people. The ensemble also hopes to transform the community it calls home.

A little know fact about Shengang is that it produces some of the top saxophones in the world.

The success of this factory is built upon owner Hsu Wen-yu, whose technical proficiency at making saxophones is unparalleled.

There are only two factories in the world producing saxophones this way. Aside from us, there is a factory in Germany that uses one-piece construction, while others rely on soldering.

One-piece body construction requires fine craftsmanship and can result in a high failure rate, though it also produces a more beautiful tone. The ability to produce saxophones in this manner has brought lots of interest from American, French, German and Japanese manufacturers. Many eagerly line up to place orders. While business may be bustling, none of the saxophones bear the name of their creator, Hsu Wen-yu. His name isn’t even well known in Shengang.

We are responsible for quality but the brand is not ours. We don’t have the ability to market ourselves and create our own brand, so we remain an OEM manufacturer.

Hsu and his employees finally began to learn about marketing and promotion when an official from the local district office took an interest.

A Shengang community section chief found it funny that saxophones were being made in Shengang. He thought they were all made in Houli until he took a closer look.

This municipal employee, Kuo Hsin-chih, was looking for a way to promote local culture. He decided to use the saxophone. Kuo even began studying the saxophone and set up the Hot Sax Saxophone ensemble with the intention of playing on stage.

Unfortunately, Kuo became ill and never had the chance to perform.

He was seriously ill. We finished playing, and he died. But before then, he helped us get our first performance at this cultural center. 

After the death of their founder, several ensemble members were depressed for months. But they remembered this civil servant’s desire to make music part of Shengang’s unique culture.

Many of the ensemble members had little formal training, so they decided to hire a music teacher. Some worked in the daytime, attended classes in the evening, and practiced at home.

I decided to give this a try. Typically I teach students rather than community members, but I found these community members to be very enthusiastic. They have made a lot of progress.

The Hot Sax Saxophone ensemble is known locally. It is planning more concerts to inspire greater numbers of people with music.

很哈薩克斯風 

很多人不知道，世界各地賣的頂級薩克斯風，大多是來自台中神岡的一間工廠，許多世界知名的樂器公司，都要排隊找他們做頂級薩克斯風。然而這間工廠一直是代工廠，沒有品牌，不懂行銷，在國內反而沒沒無聞，直到當地區公所一位課長，得知了這樣的情況，他發願要讓薩克斯風音樂，成為神岡引以為傲的文化，沒想到這個宏願，真的在當地開始慢慢發酵。

這是來自台中神岡的”哈薩客”薩克斯風重奏樂團，團員來自各行各業，沒有音樂基礎，各個從零開始，都很熱愛薩克斯風。 

但裡面有個人不一樣，他是被爸爸硬拖進來練薩克斯風。

他叫吳斌，是哈薩客的編曲師，擁有「絕對音感」的他，另一個身分是國家級最年輕的鋼琴調音師。

然而他的父親吳春夏也發現，吳斌平常的行為，和別的孩子不一樣，他不跟人家講話，感覺常常無視周遭的事物，或容易和別人起衝突。就醫後才發現，原來自己的兒子是自閉兒。

自閉症的絕對是最大問題，因為他們不會像我們這樣修飾詞句，講話就他想什麼，直接就會講出來，無形中得罪人他自己都不知道。

後來吳春夏也不管兒子根本沒學過薩克斯風，就直接把他拉進哈薩客樂團，希望能夠讓他學會溝通。

痛苦到極點，嘴巴吹到非常痛，然後拍子抓不準，聲音都完全吹不好，已經沒有氣了但是也要硬撐完。我大概吹六個月才有辦法跟他們一起合奏。

投入薩克斯風的吳斌，加上其他團員的鼓勵，現在的他比較不怕生，也較能接受別人的指教。而哈薩客樂團成立的目的之一，就是用音樂改變人生，還有透過音樂改變神岡。

說到神岡，很多人不知道，有一間工廠生產了世界頂級的薩克斯風。

這裡的薩克斯風，全是老闆許文郁的結晶，他所製作薩克斯風之好，技術無人能敵。

像這種東西，全世界現在剩下兩家在做這種東西而已，像我們這一家，還有一家是德國，其他的都是用焊錫上去，那個是騙人的，這是一體成型。

一體成型的管身，製作工細，失敗率高，但這項技術牽扯到的是優美的音色，這項技術也是讓美法德日等知名廠商，都排隊找他做薩克斯風的原因。只是，運到國外的薩克斯風，都看不到許文郁的名字，連在神岡當地都沒沒無聞。

我們是做品質，但是品牌不是我們的，我們是沒有那個行銷的能力，沒有說自創品牌，所以都是原廠委託製造。

許文郁和一起做樂器的老員工們不懂得行銷，只有穩紮穩打的幫人做代工。直到某一天……

神岡區社會科課長，他發覺說神岡也有在做薩克斯風，他覺得有趣，他想說奇怪，
做薩克斯風都是在后里，神岡哪有可能有，有一次機會就對了，他發現真的有。

大家口中的這名郭課長，名叫郭信志，他一直致力於神岡的文化推廣，卻遲遲找不到強大的著力點，這個意外發現，讓郭信志發願，要讓薩克斯風音樂，成為神岡的文化。他開始推廣，自己也投身學習薩克斯風，甚至還跟學員組了個團，打算要登上大舞台。

沒想到，登台的前一刻卻傳來噩耗，郭課長因病，沒能上台。

他病重，我們吹完之後，他就過世了。他幫我們爭取到文化中心的第一場表演，他就過世了。

哈薩客樂團的推手突然去世，讓團員心情低落了好幾個月，直到他們想起當初
郭課長「要讓音樂成為神岡文化一部分」的那個夢。

由於團員們都是非音樂科班出身，所以開始請老師教，而且白天上班，晚上上課兼團練，回家後就是練習再練習。

我就抱著試試看的心態，因為我一般都教音樂科班的學生，沒有教社會人士，後來居然他們都滿認真的，也進步很多。

現在的哈薩客在神岡小有名氣，未來他們也將持續以音樂會友，讓更多人從音樂裡得到力量。
