Students stage sit-in over review of trade-in-services pact (2014/04/02)
As the DPP blocked review of the cross-strait trade-in-services pact inside the Legislative Yuan, students staged a sit-in outside. The students demand that legislation for a cross-strait agreement monitoring mechanism be completed before review of the pact proceeds.
Students stationed outside the Legislative Yuan vowed to block review of the cross-strait trade-in-services pact.
I worry that they’ll finish review before legislation is in place (to monitor cross-strait agreements). Our main request is for the law to be completed prior to review. Without this legislation, we are concerned that the review will be meaningless.
Fearing that the government will reject their demand for a review mechanism to be completed first, the students put additional pressure on lawmakers. Several people were tired, but they still remained at the sit-in.
They’re showing us no respect. After seeing half a million people take to the streets on Sunday, I don’t think the government should act recklessly. It should respect the voice of the people.
At the same time, the group Democracy Kuroshio sent nearly 40 students to KMT headquarters to protest. They too called for completion of a monitoring mechanism before review of the pact takes place.
