Brick and mortar bookstores are struggling due to strong competition from on-line retailers and e-books. Taipei’s Chongqing South Road once had more than 100 bookstores but only 20 remain. They must rely on added services such as cafes to survive.

This 80-ping bookstore is trying desperately to survive. It is transforming its business by renting out 25 pings of space to this bakery which draws up to 400 people a day, some of whom make purchases in the bookstore.

I think consumers will come to buy bread and afterwards buy books. Also my original customers will come. They can interact to help business grow.

By renting out part of its space, the bookstore can reduce its rent obligation and potentially increase sales. The owner has also set out tables and chairs where guests can have a drink and look at books, making this space more functional.

High mountain oolong tea is provided to visitors. I hope they can remember this street as a place for bookstores, and I hope we can survive despite this decline.

More and more bookstores are diversifying their business by incorporating cafes or other vendors but some have been unable to transform. One is Scholars Books, which specializes in information technology. It will close on Sept. 20 after four decades in business
