Participant in government apprenticeship program learns the art of carp raising (2014/03/10)
To keep traditional techniques and industries alive, the Ministry of Labor encourages masters to pair up with apprentices. Tonight we look at a successful example of a recent college graduate who paired up with a master ornamental carp dealer.
Yunlin native Zhong Yingying is known as the “Queen of Koi.” Every year the 36-year-old raises a million koi which she sells around the world. Annual output surpasses NT$10 million. To pass on her knowledge, she has taken on an apprentice.
When 25-year-old Huang Cheng-yi graduated from college last year, he was interested in aquaculture. By participating in a special government program to pair apprentices and masters, he was paired with Zhong.

In the future I will use my experience to instruct future generations. This will contribute to development of the aquaculture industry.

What’s most important is the willpower and patience of the apprentice. A related major isn’t necessary to learn.
The experience Huang is gaining will make it easier for him to find a job in the future. An added benefit will be the passing on of traditional techniques.
