Cancer patients to benefit from new diagnostic device at NTUH (2014/03/11)
Today National Taiwan University Hospital introduced a new device that combines positron emission tomography with the nuclear magnetic resonance technology used in MRIs. This cutting-edge tool will assist doctors in making cancer diagnoses and deciding on treatments.
Traditional NMR technology to track cancer cells in organs and PET to explore the possibility of metastasis are both part of this device. Before NTUH’s ribbon cutting ceremony today, the tool was already put to use.

Already at least two or three patients have had their original plans for surgery or therapy changed after we tested them using this MRI/PET scan device.
According to NTUH, the device can increase the accuracy of cancer diagnoses from 80 percent to 98 percent. It also lowers radiation exposure to as little as a third of normal PET scans.

Original PET scans also use computed tomography. This new MRI/PET scan device does not include the radiation of the CT, so exposure drops by at least half.
The technique costs patients NT$10,000 at a minimum and is not yet covered by national health insurance.
