Taipei front runner could be absent from upcoming opposition debate (2014/03/10)

One day after four DPP hopefuls in Taipei’s mayoral election held a debate, attention has turned to a coming debate that will include non-party members. Writer Neil Peng is already confirmed. But independent candidate and opposition front runner Ko Wen-je is making it clear that he doesn’t want to attend. 

The next opposition debate will be hosted by the Taiwan Association of University Professors. The televised event will provide a stage for non-DPP party members. But the biggest star may not even show.

I already gave a reply for the (Yilan) banquet. Suddenly, last week this organization contacted me. Early on I said I wouldn’t attend. Generally, I don’t want to go.

Prior to March 7, six opposition candidates replied to say they will attend this debate. On March 8, we received a text message from Dr. Ko to tell us he had a fundraising banquet that day in Yilan and wouldn’t return to Taipei until 3 p.m. Our response was that we were willing to move the debate to 3 o’clock, but Dr. Ko didn’t reply.

Writer Neil Peng and four DPP candidates are confirmed. The association says the debate will proceed as planned on Sunday at 2 o’clock.

台教會辯論

台灣教授協會將於週日舉行在野陣營辯論會，特別邀請兩位親綠的非黨籍參選人，台大醫師柯文哲、作家馮光遠，一同與民進黨參選人辯論。不過，柯文哲表示原則上不想去。

台教會舉辦在野參選人電視辯論會，希望讓不是黨籍的參選人也能為自己辯護，不過其中一個無黨籍候選人柯文哲可能不會來。

不過台教會會長呂忠津否認臨時邀約。

“3月7號之前，六位在野陣營參選人都已經回應，出席這場辯論會，那我們也確實在3月8號有收到柯醫師傳一個簡訊說他當天在宜蘭有一個募款餐會，回到台北是三點，我們回覆願意把辯論會的時間移到三點，那柯醫師就沒有再回覆”

目前四位民進黨候選人及作家馮光遠都會參加，台教會表示，辯論會仍如期在星期天下午兩點展開。
