If Costa Rica wasn’t in your bucket list of places to visit, it should be now.
Territorio de Zaguates or "Land of the Strays," located in the mountains of Santa Bárbara in Costa Rica’s Heredia province, is a dog sanctuary to more than 900 dogs.
The privately funded and volunteer-run organization is a "No-Kill" shelter that has been standing for 8 years, thanks to founders Lya Battle and Alvaro Saumet. They dedicated the land to the "well-being and respect of the animals," which also includes cats, according to the official Facebook website.
According to the website, they sterilize all incoming dogs, just like any other shelter. Territorio de Zaguates has enclosed facilities for the dogs as well, approximately 1,000 square meters, but the dogs get to freely roam around the hills with companions, volunteers and visitors who stop by. Walking with the dogs is free of charge, but its encouraged for visitors to schedule their visit ahead of time.
