Ma meets KMT municipal leaders, announces work stoppage at Fourth Nuclear Power Plant (2014/04/27)

As anti-nuclear protests continued in Taipei, President Ma convened a meeting of KMT municipal leaders. Later, he announced construction on the two reactors within the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant would be halted, though a safety check of the no. 1 reactor would continue. Ma also announced that the future of the power plant would be put to a public referendum.

The no. 1 nuclear reactor will see a stoppage of construction and only undertake security inspection, and when the inspection is completed, it will be sealed. The no. 2 reactor will see a complete suspension of work, and a public referendum will decide if the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant becomes operational.

The meeting achieved consensus to put the future of the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant to a referendum ballot but no discussion to lower the required voter threshold. KMT municipal leaders were, however, able to express their personal opinion about the matter.

If anyone has questions they should be clear about it before participating in a referendum. One shouldn’t be unclear about this issue or be subject to political mobilizations or elections or what type of referendum is held. I think that this could cause a rift between people in Taiwan and can’t be fixed as the problem can only grow.

Today’s KMT meeting still failed to address the DPP’s request to lower the voter threshold required for the referendum, meaning the stand off over nuclear power in Taiwan continues.

核四的運轉交由公投決定，但是否降低核四公投門檻，仍沒有結論，因此縣市長只能各自表達意見。

在沒有回應民進黨提的特別條例門檻訴求之下，這場核四風暴能不能化解，還在未定之天。
